One of the first female artists to perform her self-penned material and play the piano in the 70's in France, Véronique Sanson was once described as a "heavy Carole King" (New Musical Express, 1973). With the recent release of her 14th studio album (Plusieurs Lunes – Many moons – a reference to the period of time between this album and her previous one), she remains one of our true pop stars as well as a talented musician and songwriter – and her audience still praises her extraordinary energy on stage.
There can be many reasons why you would connect from abroad. Let's try and name some:
– First of all, you might have heard of Amoureuse (or Emotion), both English covers (with different lyrics) of the same original track, which Sanson first released in 1972. Kiki Dee (Elton John's protégée at the time), Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy and Shirley Bassey recorded it, and now have it regularly re-released on their own Best of albums. Adapted in 6 languages, the song was covered by more than 30 artists in all.
– Through out her recording and touring carreer, she has worked with internationally famous musicians including Leland Sklar, Manu Katche, Willy Andersen, the late Plato T. Jones, Steve Madaio, Ray Parker Jr or Kim Bullard to name only a few - and her name can be found on many musicians bios.
– Having written and recorded some of her own material in English, as well as having lived an "American life" for 11 years between Denver, Los Angeles and Hawai (along with Stephen Stills, from CSNY, whom she married in 1973), she was once offered an international career. She declined, refusing to be told who to work with, or what sort of music to record, as well as claiming that the prospect of spending months in endless tours was not so enjoyable...
